The National Council wants the federal government to work with the cantons to provide more study and internship places for future doctors. On Tuesday, the upper chamber adopted a motion to this effect by Benjamin Roduit (center/VS).
The National Council reached its decision by 144 votes to 43 with 4 abstentions. The Council of States must now deal with the matter.
Roduit based his demand on the shortage of doctors in Switzerland. Today, around forty percent of doctors come from abroad, he said. The former principal of a grammar school in Sion also criticized the fact that the proportion of students failing admissions tests or examinations after the first year of study was too high in view of the quality of grammar school education and in comparison to other courses of study.
Economics Minister Guy Parmelin unsuccessfully requested that the motion be rejected. He acknowledged that it was an important problem. However, the cantons were responsible.
