In February, Zurich Airport once again significantly increased the number of passengers compared to the same month last year. The number of passengers was 99.2% of the level in February 2019, i.e. the same month before the coronavirus pandemic.

A total of 2.02 million passengers traveled through Switzerland's largest airport in February. This was 16.4 percent more than in the same month last year, as the airport announced on Tuesday evening. Just over two thirds were local passengers, while 32 percent were transfer passengers, i.e. passengers for whom Zurich Airport was not the start or end destination of their journey.

The number of aircraft movements last month was also higher than in the same month last year. The airport recorded a total of 17,764 take-offs and landings, 12% more than in the previous year. The average number of passengers per flight was 130, one percent more than in the previous year. The seat occupancy rate fell by one percentage point to 77%.

The airport also handled 34,053 tons of freight in February. This represents an increase of 7 percent compared to the same month last year. However, compared to February 2019, i.e. before the coronavirus pandemic, 6 percent less freight was handled.

More money was also spent in the airport's stores and restaurants during the month under review. Compared to the previous year, so-called commercial turnover increased by 9.9 percent to 41.9 million francs. With an increase of 13.8 percent, sales on the "airside" rose more strongly than those on the "landside", which grew by 5.6 percent, according to the figures.

However, it should be noted that there was an additional operating day in February 2024 due to the leap year, the airport writes.
