Negotiations between Switzerland and the EU will officially begin next Monday. President Viola Amherd will travel to Brussels to meet EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Negotiations on future relations between Switzerland and the EU will be opened in the presence of the chief negotiators from both sides, as announced by the Department of the President of the Swiss Confederation on Thursday. Amherd will also meet the Vice-President of the EU Commission, Maros Sefcovic. He is the Commissioner responsible for relations with Switzerland.

A return visit by Sefcovic to Switzerland with Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis is planned for early summer. The Swiss head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will not be in Brussels on Monday. He will be traveling to East Africa for several days from Sunday, the FDFA announced on Thursday.

Electricity and other agreements

Both sides have had a mandate for the negotiations for a few days now. Among other things, this includes new or updated agreements in the areas of electricity, free movement of persons and land transport. Institutional elements such as the dynamic adoption of law and the involvement of the European Court of Justice for dispute resolution are also part of the negotiation package.

The various agreements are to be discussed in parallel. According to a Common Understanding, which both sides signed in October 2023, the negotiations should be concluded by the end of 2024.
