The delegates of the Swiss SVP are expected to elect Marcel Dettling, National Councillor from the canton of Schwyz, as the new party president this Saturday. Dettling is the only candidate and is set to succeed Marco Chiesa, who is stepping down from the Council of States in Ticino.
The SVP search committee described the 43-year-old Dettling in advance as the "absolute preferred candidate for the party presidency". The farmer from Oberiberg SZ is widely accepted. He has been a member of the National Council since 2015. He became a member of the party committee in 2018 and has been Vice President of the SVP Switzerland since 2022.
Before the presidential election, the SVP wants to adopt the slogans for the referendums on June 9. These include the SP's premium relief initiative, the centrist cost-brake initiative and the energy tax decree.
The SVP delegates meet in Langenthal BE for their assembly.
