Former Dortmund Bundesliga striker Alex Frei has terminated his contract as coach of FC Aarau with immediate effect and intends to take some time out. The third-placed team in the second Swiss football league made the announcement on Monday. "In recent weeks and months, I have realized that I no longer have the strength and energy to fully pursue my passion as a coach," the 44-year-old explained in a statement from the club. Club boss Sandro Burki explained that they would like to thank Frei "for his valuable and always highly professional work. We are losing a highly esteemed person with whom we have had a great time."

Frei was a striker for Borussia Dortmund from 2006 to 2009. In 83 competitive matches for BVB, he scored 37 goals and provided 20 assists.
