The Federal Roads Office (Astra) expects traffic jams at the Gotthard north portal before Easter despite the forecast of bad weather in the south. Astra spokesman Thomas Rohrbach said this on Swiss radio SRF on Wednesday morning.

This means that some day-trippers are likely to travel to the ski resorts due to the early Easter date. The journey to the south is still likely to take some time, according to the radio. According to Astra, traffic jams and traffic obstructions can be expected as early as Wednesday.

According to Astra, the high volume of traffic also leads to "undesirable traffic diversions" through towns along the national roads. Affected regions have therefore taken measures. The canton of Graubünden, for example, which is affected by the alternative route via the San Bernardino, is introducing "retention posts". According to cantonal engineer Reto Knuchel, these are intended to "create an artificial backlog on the cantonal road network with the idea that traffic will remain on the national highway."
