SVP Aargau distances itself from extremism after criticism

The SVP Aargau has distanced itself from right-wing extremist positions. As the governing party, it is clearly committed to democracy and the rule of law, it announced in a communiqué on Wednesday.
The announcement is in connection with the Austrian right-wing extremist Martin Sellner, who was stopped and turned away by the Aargau cantonal police in Tegerfelden AG on March 16. The police intervened because, in their view, public safety was not guaranteed at the event organized by the right-wing extremist group "Junge Tat".
The police also prevented political opponents from traveling to the event, according to a statement. The Young SVP Aargau subsequently expressed solidarity with the Austrian, which in turn led to criticism.
After the SVP initially failed to respond officially, it now wrote in the press release: "We clearly reject extreme and inhumane attitudes." At the same time, the SVP stands for freedom of expression. It should not be the case that "legal events are restricted and broken up by the state because of left-wing chaos".
Other political positions and attitudes should be able to be expressed freely as long as they remain within legal boundaries. The Junge SVP Aargau also shares this attitude and is in the process of working through the matter internally.
