The Swiss electricity company Axpo is considering operating the Beznau nuclear power plant beyond 2030. The aim is to strengthen the security of electricity supply in Switzerland, Axpo announced on Thursday.

The electricity company is also submitting a project for a reserve power plant for emergencies for the years after 2026 to the federal government. In view of the potentially dramatic effects of large-scale and prolonged power outages, security of supply is of the utmost importance. There are no lifetime limits for nuclear power plants in Switzerland. They can be operated as long as they are safe, Axpo continued.

The Beznau nuclear power plant in Döttingen AG is still planned to operate for 60 years, but is now examining the fundamental feasibility of operating beyond that. According to Axpo, safety is the top priority. The review is expected to take around a year. The Beznau I reactor unit went online in 1969 and reactor unit II in 1971.
