A burning vehicle blocked the entrance to the Great St. Bernard tunnel in Valais on Friday morning. The connecting road to Italy was impassable for almost two hours.
In the incident, a car caught fire in the gallery in front of the tunnel, said a spokeswoman for the Valais cantonal police when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. She confirmed reports from "Le Nouvelliste" and Rhône FM. No one was injured.
Images from the tunnel's webcam showed a number of vehicles coming to a standstill before entering the tunnel, the report continued. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. Traffic slowly resumed at around 11.45 am.
The Grosse-St.-Bernhard Tunnel is part of the Grosse-St.-Bernhard Pass. This connects Valais with the Italian Aosta Valley. The route is heavily frequented by tourists over the Easter holidays.
