Katharina Michel has been crowned the 2024 winner in a comeback of former talents from the singing casting show "Music Star". In the revival edition on Saturday, twenty years after the first season, eight former candidates competed again.
In addition to Michel, former starlets Carmen Fenk, Salome Clausen, Fabienne Louves, Sebastian "Baschi" Bürgin, Daniel Kandlbauer, Börni Höhn and Leo Ritzmann also made appearances. Former judges Arabella Kiesbauer, Chris von Rohr and Detlef D! Soost also took part.
The candidates decided together that Michel should win the title. She was the last "Music Star" winner in 2009. After that, the show was discontinued. "Madness. But for me, everyone is a winner anyway," Michel commented on her win. The judges were also impressed by Michel's performance. "I'm totally blown away", said Kiesbauer after Michel's performance.
For her victory, she will receive ten thousand francs as a donation to charity. Michel wants to donate the money to the Blindspot Bern inclusion project for people with disabilities, as she announced on the show.
Four seasons
The revival show brought stars and popular faces from back then back on stage together again. "Baschi" visited former "Music Star" contestants to see how their lives have changed since the show.
"Music Star" was one of the most successful entertainment programs on Swiss television (SRF). The show, which ran for a total of four seasons, was always looking for the greatest Swiss singing talent. The candidates sang well-known songs. The performances were judged by three jury members. The first winner in February 2004 was Carmen Fenk from Sevelen in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley.
Partly more successful than Tagesschau
The show was first broadcast 20 years ago. It achieved record ratings with around 1.5 million viewers at times and was sometimes more successful than SRF's flagship program "Tagesschau". The show managed to become a regular topic of discussion at work or in break areas.
The show was based on the Austrian format "Starmania" and followed similar shows in Germany such as "Popstars" (2000) and "Deutschland sucht den Superstar" (2002) in prime time on Saturday evenings. The Swiss "Music Star" edition faded over time until it was discontinued due to falling ratings.
"Music Star" participant Sebastian Bürgin, alias "Baschi", achieved lasting success. Although he only came sixth, he finally made his breakthrough.
