On June 9, Switzerland votes on the Energy Cloak Decree, pivotal for its green energy strategy. The decree aims to boost renewable sources and maintain nuclear safety, aligning with the 2050 Energy Strategy.

This move responds to global tensions and environmental challenges, seeking to increase renewable energy production, enhance supply security, and reduce consumption. It supports large—and small-scale solar and wind projects and has a solar mandate for larger new buildings.

The decree proposes special zones for renewable projects, balancing nature conservation and energy needs while protecting sensitive habitats from energy developments. Importantly, it keeps consumer costs stable with a fixed grid surcharge.

The decree, supported by Energy Minister Albert Rösti and various groups, claims it is vital for Switzerland’s energy independence. However, it faces opposition from those concerned about landscape impacts and energy reliability, including a notable challenge from the SVP.

As the referendum approaches, it represents a critical moment for Switzerland’s energy future and broader environmental commitments.
