180 novels are in the running for this year's German Book Prize, which will be awarded in October. 106 publishers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland have submitted novels to the jury.
This was announced by the German Publishers and Booksellers Association in Frankfurt on Tuesday. The German Book Prize is considered one of the most important awards in the industry and has been awarded since 2005. The prize is endowed with a total of 37,500 euros: The winner receives 25,000 euros, while the other shortlisted authors each receive 2,500 euros.
Of the titles submitted, 91 are from the current spring program, while 76 others will be launched in the autumn. 13 titles were already published last fall. The prestigious award is being presented for the 20th time this year.
Each publisher could submit a maximum of two titles that were published or will be published between October 2023 and September 17, 2024. In addition, up to five further titles can be recommended - the jury can request titles from this list for the selection process.
At their first joint jury meeting, the jury members elected Natascha Freundel from rbb as their spokesperson. The jury consists of six other members. It decides on the novel of the year in a multi-stage selection process.
On August 20, 2024, it will announce the 20 nominated titles. From this longlist, the jurors will select six titles for the shortlist, which will be published on September 17, 2024. The six authors will only find out who has won on the evening of the award ceremony, October 14, 2024.
