Early morning snow covers Bern and brings intermittent showers across the northern Alps, posing risks to early blooming vegetation.
It snowed on the northern side of the Alps early Thursday morning down to the lowlands. According to SRF Meteo, there will also be intermittent showers and snow from 500 to 800 meters during the day.
The dome of the Federal Palace in the city of Bern and the roofs of the surrounding buildings were covered in white sugar, as a photo published by the weather service Meteonews on the X platform (formerly Twitter) showed.
A few flakes also fell in the city of Zurich, although the snow did not remain on the ground, as can be seen in a video on the online news portal “20 Minuten”.
There have always been cold spells in April, wrote MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, on X.
However, it is problematic when these are preceded by early warm periods, which ensure early vegetation development. In this case, late frost and snow caused major damage.
