Jura canton reports a substantial deficit in 2023, exacerbated by the missing Swiss National Bank profit distribution.
The canton of Jura recorded a deficit of CHF 11.8 million in its 2023 annual accounts. Without the use of reserves for budget policy, the shortfall would have amounted to CHF 37.8 million.
The reason for this is the absence of the Swiss National Bank’s (SNB) profit distribution of almost CHF 23 million, as the government announced on Thursday.
“The non-payment of SNB shares is worsening this financial year,” said Jura’s Finance Director Rosalie Beuret Siess to the media on Thursday.
This shortfall could not be compensated for by cost-cutting measures and higher corporate tax revenues. The government had anticipated a deficit of CHF 5.7 million in the cantonal budget.
After 2014, this is the second financial year without SNB contributions. This situation particularly highlights the canton’s dependence on income at federal level, the Jura government noted.
Despite the delicate financial situation, the canton wants to ensure that the admission of the “still Bernese” municipality of Moutier in 2026 is guaranteed under the best possible conditions.
