A senior woman was fatally struck by a train at a level crossing, highlighting concerns over pedestrian safety near railway tracks.
A 76-year-old woman was fatally struck by a train at a level crossing in Gränichen AG on Monday afternoon. The pedestrian probably did not see the approaching train, according to the Aargau cantonal police on Tuesday.
Shortly before 3 p.m., the 76-year-old woman from the region wanted to cross the level crossing at Nordstrasse in Gränichen AG. In doing so, she “presumably overlooked the approaching train”, which led to the fatal collision, according to the police. The WSB regional train runs partly as a streetcar.
The road had to be closed until around 6.30 p.m. for the recovery and securing of evidence and traffic had to be diverted over a wide area. As the circumstances of the fatal collision have not yet been fully clarified, the cantonal police are asking anyone who can provide information about the accident to come forward.
