Swiss Surveillance Fell Last Year: Federal Intelligence

Swiss law enforcement sees a reduction in surveillance activities, primarily due to fewer aerial searches.

The Swiss law enforcement authorities and the Federal Intelligence Service ordered fewer surveillance measures last year. The main reason for this is that there were fewer aerial searches, i.e. checks to see which cell phones were dialled in and where.

This was revealed in a statement issued by the federal government on Thursday.

Most surveillance measures were ordered to investigate property crimes. This concerns a third of all real-time and retrospective surveillance measures.

Almost a fifth of all measures were carried out to investigate serious violations of the Narcotics Act and around 15% due to criminal acts against life and limb.

Almost 11% were ordered for emergency searches.

The other surveillance measures are related to searches and the investigation of various offences, including crimes and offences against the public peace and criminal acts against sexual integrity.
