The storm that hit La Chaux-de-Fonds NE last July 24 caused more damage to buildings than previously assumed. The cantonal buildings insurance company estimates the damage at 117.15 million francs. The original estimate was between 70 and 90 million francs.
A total of 2,989 losses were reported, as the buildings insurance company summarized in its annual report. Including the damage in the town of Le Locle NE, 3,300 buildings were affected, some of which were completely destroyed.
On average, the damage amounted to around 40,000 francs. However, the damage to nine buildings was estimated at over one million francs.
The storm, which according to meteorologists could possibly also be classified as a hurricane, claimed one life and injured around 40 people in the La Chaux-de-Fonds region on July 24, 2023. Almost two thirds of the building fabric of the watchmaking town was damaged by the strong winds. Around 1,500 trees in the city had to be replanted after the storm.
