Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz sees the planned peace conference on Ukraine as an opportunity. "Even if the big peace issue is not discussed there for the time being, but questions that are also part of it, that would be a big step," said the SPD politician on Saturday at a panel discussion of the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND) in Potsdam. "More can then be developed from this." Switzerland had invited more than 160 delegations to a high-level conference on peace in Ukraine on Lake Lucerne in mid-June.
Russia invaded the neighboring country of Ukraine in February 2022. Ukraine has been defending itself against the war of aggression ever since. The Chancellor emphasized that everything would be done to exhaust all diplomatic options.
Ukraine is trying to remedy the shortage of soldiers at the front with several laws. The Chancellor does not see any danger for Ukrainians liable for military service who are gainfully employed in Germany. "Employment also creates security of residence." He had made enquiries, Scholz said. "The legal situation in Germany is such that residence here is not at risk."
The Chancellor called on Ukrainians in Germany to work. "We hope that those who are here from Ukraine, as far as they are able to work, will now also work," he said. "Many are already doing so, it has to be said, but there are still a few hundred thousand more who are urgently needed on the labor market."
