A residential project in a former wine warehouse in Basel has been awarded the Prix SIA building culture prize by the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects. It was chosen by a nine-member jury and in a public vote against 168 entries.
The project with 64 apartments, commercial premises, music rehearsal rooms and a café in the Lysbüchel district not far from the border with France is "a wonderful example of the successful conversion of an industrial building into a residential building", the jury announced on Thursday. The Habitat Foundation's project in the former Coop wine warehouse meets the requirements of contemporary architecture in several respects.
The prize was awarded for the first time. Around 300 people attended the award ceremony in Winterthur ZH. The Prix SIA - consisting of a jury prize and a public prize - is to be awarded every two years in future. It is aimed at Swiss experts from the construction, technology and environmental sectors. The prize will be awarded to projects that make an exemplary contribution to the sustainable design of living space.
