Long traffic jams formed in the south and north in front of the Gotthard road tunnel on Monday. In Airolo TI, this grew to around nine kilometers in the afternoon. In Göschenen UR, a column around seven kilometers long formed.
In Ticino, the waiting time heading north was up to one hour and 20 minutes, according to the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS). On the way south, travelers in the canton of Uri had to wait an hour at times.
One of the reasons for the traffic jams was a broken-down vehicle in the tunnel, which caused it to be closed for around twenty minutes, as an employee of the Viasuisse traffic service told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request. Construction sites in front of the north and south portals also had an impact.
