Winterthur court sentences 20-year-old for flame attack

On Thursday, the Winterthur District Court sentenced a 20-year-old New Zealander for a flame attack on a bus passenger. He received a prison sentence of two years and eight months for attempted grievous bodily harm.
However, the 20-year-old does not have to go to prison. The prison sentence is postponed in favor of outpatient therapy. The court waived the expulsion from the country.
In September 2022, the convict had attacked a 32-year-old drunk man at a bus stop with a jet of pepper spray that had been set alight. The flames ignited the victim's head. Two witnesses were able to extinguish the flames in time so that the man has no permanent injuries today.
The 20-year-old colleague of the main perpetrator was also convicted. The Swiss national received a 13-month conditional prison sentence for assault and attempted grievous bodily harm. He attacked the victim with his hands, feet and a wooden board. The sentences are not yet legally binding.
