On Tuesday night, the earth shook at Lake Wägital in the canton of Schwyz with a magnitude of around 4.3 on the Richter scale. This earthquake is likely to have been felt throughout Switzerland, according to the Swiss Seismological Service of ETH Zurich (SED).
The quake occurred at 02.34 a.m. approximately six kilometers southwest of Lake Wägital, writes the SED in an automated message. Minor damage is possible in isolated cases during an earthquake of this magnitude near the epicenter.
The SED registers an average of three to four earthquakes per day in Switzerland and nearby neighboring countries, or 1,000 to 1,500 earthquakes per year. Around 10 to 20 earth tremors with magnitudes of around 2.5 and above are actually felt by the population each year.
