The Biel/Bienne Forum for Bilingualism has been awarded this year's prize for promotion. The jury found that the forum addresses a broad target audience with its diverse projects. Its work reaches far beyond the borders of Biel/Bienne.
In order to achieve nationwide appeal, the forum developed the "Bilingualism" and "Multilingualism" labels for companies and administrations, for example. With the online platform "E-Tandem", the forum connects people who want to improve their language skills.
Founded in 1996, the forum has its origins in the bilingual city of Biel/Bienne. It is committed to improving understanding between languages and cultures.
The forum, with its wide range of activities, helps to ensure that the different cultures in Switzerland "live together rather than side by side", said Neuchâtel State Councillor and jury president Florence Nater in a press release from the Foundation for Federal Cooperation (ch Foundation). It awards the prize of 10,000 Swiss francs for the promotion of Swiss culture.
"This award is recognition and legitimization of the work we have been doing for years," said a delighted Virginie Borel, Director of the Forum, in a statement on Friday. "When it comes to multilingualism, we are drivers, advisors, lobbyists and educators all at the same time. We are bursting with ideas to promote linguistic diversity in Switzerland. With the prize money, we can certainly realize other projects that are close to our hearts."
The jury had four projects to choose from. With a view to the exchange between language cultures, the jury also recognized the "Filmo" project. Swiss film classics are digitized and subtitled in the national languages.
