Representatives from the coffee industry, science and non-governmental organizations have launched a platform for sustainable coffee together with the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco). Together, they want to strengthen sustainability in the sector.
In a declaration of intent signed on Thursday, the industry committed itself to promoting social, environmental and economic sustainability throughout the entire value chain. Swiss companies certainly carry weight: Switzerland is not only the world's largest coffee trading center, but also one of the largest exporters of roasted coffee.
The industry has been committed to greater sustainability for years, but there is still a lot to do, Nicolas A. Tamari, President of the Swiss Coffee Trade Association, was quoted as saying in a press release. "We are convinced that with this platform, we have created the right instrument to fulfill our responsibility."
Economic cooperation with countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam and Peru could have a greater impact through closer cooperation with the Swiss private sector, added Minister of Economic Affairs Guy Parmelin. "And for our companies, the platform can make an important contribution to compliance with due diligence along their value chain."
The platform was launched by the industry associations Swiss Coffee Trade Association, Procafé and the Swiss Roasters Guild, Seco and representatives from science and non-governmental organizations.
