Following the Swiss electorate's yes vote to the energy decree, the SVP Switzerland intends to closely monitor its implementation. "We will take the proponents at their word", said SVP spokesperson Thomas Knutti, National Councillor from the canton of Bern, on Sunday.
The SVP will take a close look at whether the planned expansion of renewable energies with the decree will lead to more expensive electricity, Knutti told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Sunday. The SVP will also examine whether the maximum number of 150 to 200 new wind turbines to be built, as stated by the proponents, will be adhered to.
The party will also ensure that the autonomy of municipalities is respected in the approval processes. Knutti is convinced that the goal of expanding renewable energies to 35 terawatt hours (TWh) per year in Switzerland by 2035, as formulated in the legal text, will be a challenge. He is disappointed
Knutti assumes that the Swiss people's approval will lead to higher electricity costs. The Yes vote can probably be explained by the fact that the expansion of hydropower played an important role in the entire decree package. Nobody is against this expansion, not even the SVP.
The fact that the people had already said yes to the Energy Strategy 2050 was probably also a decisive factor. "It's almost impossible to go back now," says Knutti.
