Heavy thunderstorms brought heavy rain, hail and thousands of lightning bolts across western Switzerland until early Sunday evening. Hailstones up to five centimetres in diameter fell on Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland and in the Bernese Seeland.

By 8.30 p.m., around 18,000 lightning flashes had been counted, as SRF Meteo reported on Sunday evening. The measuring station in Nyon in the canton of Vaud received the most precipitation with 50 millimetres. The thunderstorm situation is only expected to gradually calm down in the second half of the night on Monday.

The reason for this weather situation is that Switzerland is currently right on the border between cool air in the northwest and warm Mediterranean air.
