The trade union Unia is calling for a minimum wage for women of CHF 5,000 per month. Women are being told that their work is worth less. This rightly makes them "angry", said Unia President Vania Alleva on Friday in Bern on the occasion of Women's Strike Day.
It is outrageous that almost every second woman who has completed an apprenticeship earns a low wage of less than CHF 5,000, and it is unbelievable that women in Switzerland still earn CHF 1,500 less per month than men, said Alleva. Last but not least, it was outrageous that Migros could dismiss pregnant women without batting an eyelid.
It is even more of a scandal that one in three women still experience sexual harassment in the workplace. And it is also shameful for rich Switzerland that a quarter of women are affected by poverty in old age. These are all symptoms of a society that devalues women and their work and underestimates their achievements, warned Alleva.
