The Party Council of the SP Switzerland wants "active neutrality" for Switzerland and rejects the neutrality initiative of Pro Switzerland and exponents of the SVP. The SP committee, which has been in existence for a good two years, has stated this in a position paper.
It is entitled "Social Democratic foreign and peace policy based on active neutrality", as the party announced after a meeting of the party council on Friday. This took place in Olten.
SP National Councillor Fabian Molina said in a communiqué at the meeting that the initiative would play into the hands of the Putin regime and other autocracies and weaken Switzerland on the international stage. It is an "anti-sanctions initiative".
According to Molina, intelligent and targeted sanctions against those responsible for serious violations of international law and human rights are an effective means of combating these crimes.
The initiators submitted their neutrality initiative in mid-April. It calls for perpetual and armed neutrality to be enshrined in the constitution. Switzerland may neither order nor support sanctions - unless it is obliged to do so by the UN.
Bernese woman elected to the party council
Michelle Hufschmid-Lim (BE) was newly elected to the three-member party council, succeeding Miriam Locher (BL). The Swiss SP Party Council replaced the previous Executive Committee and Delegates' Assembly at the beginning of 2022 and meets at least four times a year.
