Once again, less money was earned in Switzerland last year from the transportation of letters and parcels than in the previous year. The total turnover of all companies operating in the postal sector fell by 2.9% year-on-year to CHF 4.12 billion in 2023.

As the Federal Postal Commission (Postcom) announced on Monday, the number of letters transported fell by 6.6 percent in 2023. In contrast, slightly more parcels were transported, but only 0.4 percent more than in the previous year.

Total sales in the Swiss postal market had already fallen in the previous year, as had the total number of consignments. The downward trend should be viewed against the backdrop of the exceptional years 2020 and 2021, writes Postcom. At that time, the number of postal items increased sharply due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Postcom attributes the decline in letter volumes to increasing digitalization and the slight increase in parcels to online retail. In May 2024, 209 companies were registered with Postcom as providers of postal services.

In 2023, the number of letters sent per inhabitant in Switzerland amounted to 193 units. If newspapers and magazines are included, the total number is 271 units. According to Postcom, this is well above the European average. This is 67 units.

Swiss Post achieves punctuality targets

Among other things, Postcom also ensures that Swiss Post meets the punctuality requirements for the universal service. The yellow giant did so in 2023. 97.3 percent of all A Mail letters arrived on time on the first working day after posting.

For B Mail letters, 99.5 percent of envelopes reached their destination within three working days. Swiss Post also exceeded the punctuality target for Priority and Economy parcels. Swiss Post also met the targets for the accessibility and density of access points.
