The storms of the past few days have brought large quantities of alluvial wood into Lake Geneva. The Sagrave gravel works expects to have to remove 7,000 to 9,000 cubic meters of wood from the water where the Rhone flows into the lake near Le Bouveret in Valais.

Work has been in full swing since Friday. They have work for a good week, maybe even a week and a half, Sagrave boss Claude Goulet told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Monday.

Sagrave was commissioned by the canton of Vaud to clear the alluvial debris. The company is using two boats and two pontoons with hydraulic excavators to remove tree trunks and debris near the Rhone delta.

It would not be a record if Goulet's estimate of 7,000 to 9,000 cubic meters of wood turns out to be correct. In October, a flood in the Rhone even brought in 14,500 cubic meters of wood, he said.
