The federal government spent almost ten percent more on research and development in 2023. It spent a total of around CHF 2.6 billion on this. This is CHF 245 million more than in the previous year.

According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), there was a strong increase of 12% in federal contributions to research projects. Contributions to national research institutes grew particularly strongly, namely by 14 percent.

According to the communiqué, this is due to the discontinuation of payments from the EU Framework Program for Research and Innovation. To compensate for these shortfalls, the federal government is paying more to Swiss researchers as part of transitional measures.
