The vast majority of Swiss people want to travel in the summer. The clear favorite country is Italy, as a study by insurer Generali shows.

According to the survey, 73 percent of respondents from Switzerland are planning to travel during their summer vacation. More than a quarter will be heading to the neighboring country to the south, Italy. France (17%) and Spain (16%) are also very popular. However, domestic vacations (18%) are also still popular.

Sun and beach

The decision "mountains" or "sea" is clearly in favor of the water in summer in this country: 65 percent would opt for a vacation by the sea and only 20 percent want to go to the mountains.

The decisive argument for choosing a vacation destination is the weather, as the study shows. Around 46 percent cited this as the most important criterion. In addition, around 40 percent return to a place they have been to before.

Comfort comes first

When choosing a means of transportation, the Swiss prioritize convenience over sustainability. Airplanes and cars remain the most popular means of travel, the report continues.

Swiss travelers also want to have a really good time on vacation. On average, each household will spend around CHF 4,000 on transportation, accommodation, meals and local activities this year - 18% more than last year. This also puts the vacation budget well above the European average of the equivalent of CHF 2,400.

The annual "Holiday Barometer" study reportedly surveyed 1,000 people in 21 countries. The survey was carried out by the market research institute Ipsos on behalf of the Generali subsidiary Europ Assitance.
