More aircraft took off and landed at Zurich Airport in June than in the same period last year. The gap to the figures before the coronavirus crisis was also small.

A total of 23,338 aircraft took off and landed at Zurich Airport in June. This is almost the same number as in the previous month of May. Compared to June 2023, however, it is 6.1% more and there is also a clear increase over the year as a whole. The number of aircraft movements in the first half of the year rose by 7.2% compared to the same period last year, as an analysis of data from the news agency AWP shows.

The gap to the pre-crisis figures from 2019 is also only small at just under 3%. The pre-corona crisis level was almost reached again in May (-2%).

Overall, the gap between take-offs and landings in the first six months of 2024 and the pre-crisis level is still 7.4%. The discrepancy has steadily narrowed since the beginning of the year. In January, flight volumes were still almost 15% behind the 2019 figure.

Hardly any impact from Skyguide breakdown

On June 28, air traffic was restricted due to an IT glitch at Skyguide air traffic control. As a result, 18 take-offs and 19 landings had to be canceled. Overall, however, the impact on flight operations remained manageable and there were not significantly fewer take-offs and landings on that day than on other days in June.

The day with the fewest flight movements was Saturday, June 1, when only 709 aircraft took off or landed. The highest volume of traffic was recorded on Wednesday, June 12 with 831 aircraft movements.

Additional traffic due to Ukraine conference

The "Bürgenstock Conference" on the war in Ukraine, which was held from June 15 to 16, also had an impact. In total, more than 200 additional flights were handled during the conference weekend from Friday to Sunday, many of them under high security requirements, as the airport announced on request.

Otherwise, there were no major public holidays in June that would have caused an extraordinary volume of flights. The summer vacations also only began on the last weekend of the month in some of the smaller cantons. Summer holiday traffic should then pick up again strongly from the beginning of July, when the larger cantons follow suit.

The flight movement figures at Zurich Airport are based on daily updated statistics, in which all flights are recorded according to instrument flight rules. This so-called IFR traffic includes scheduled flights as well as cargo, business and private flights. However, the number of flight movements says nothing about the size of the aircraft handled and their capacity utilization.

Zurich Airport will publish detailed passenger and traffic figures for the month of June on July 10.
