Up to 58 millimeters of precipitation in Switzerland

Between 10 and 30 millimetres of rain have fallen across Switzerland in the last 24 hours. Around Locarno TI, 58 millimetres per square meter fell, according to the weather service Meteonews on Sunday morning.

In Lugano TI and Lucerne, the weather service recorded more than 20 millimetres of precipitation per square meter within 24 hours, as shown in a graphic published on the online platform X on Sunday morning. Locally, there were also heavy thunderstorms, wrote Meteonews. The weather service recorded 1182 lightning strikes across Switzerland on Saturday.

For Sunday, the weather service in Ticino and Graubünden again expected large amounts of rain. Meteonews expected widespread precipitation of 20 to 50 millimetres per square meter.

The federal government warned of thunderstorms and persistent rain on Saturday. The Federal Office of Meteorology advised people to avoid riverside areas. If there is a risk of flooding, basements should not be entered. The danger applies from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning, depending on the area.
