Paper validation cards will continue to be sold on public transport. This has been decided by the industry. However, the nationwide obligation to operate validators will cease at the end of 2025, but they can continue to be operated regionally.
This was decided by the Strategy Council of the Alliance Swiss Pass following an assessment of developments, as detailed in a press release issued on Tuesday. Alternatives for the paper validation cards have been implemented or are being developed. The paper validation cards will remain in the public transport product range until the successor solutions have been introduced to the market.
According to the Alliance Swiss Pass, the demand for validation cards (single and multiple-journey cards) has fallen steadily in recent years and is now only concentrated in individual regions. In parts of western Switzerland, for example, there have been no more validation cards for some time.
However, the networks can continue to offer validation cards and the transport companies can operate ticket validators.
