An apprentice bricklayer has died in a work accident on a construction site in Vétroz VS. The 18-year-old was hit by a part that fell from a crane.

The accident occurred on Wednesday when the workers were busy stripping formwork from a concrete wall, as the cantonal police reported on Thursday. For reasons as yet unexplained, a part of the crane came loose during the operation and subsequently hit a worker on the ground.

After first aid at the scene, the young man was seriously injured and flown by helicopter to the hospital in Sion. He died there in the course of the afternoon. The victim was an 18-year-old Swiss national.

The public prosecutor's office, in cooperation with the cantonal police, has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
