A newborn child was placed in the baby window of Olten Cantonal Hospital on Thursday night. The baby girl is completely healthy, the hospital wrote in a statement on Friday.

The girl had been born shortly beforehand, the statement continued. She will remain in hospital for further medical examinations until she is temporarily placed with foster parents.

It is the 30th baby ever to be placed in a baby window in Switzerland. Dominik Müggler, the initiator of the Swiss baby windows, said in a statement from the hospital: "This continues the trend that more and more babies in Switzerland are being placed in a baby window rather than abandoned or even killed."

Around half of mothers would get in touch after handing over their baby. On the one hand, to find out how the baby is doing, and on the other, to leave details of the parents' identity for the child. So far, six out of 30 parents have asked for the baby back later and have received it back.

Baby windows have existed in Switzerland for over 20 years. The first one was opened at Einsiedeln Regional Hospital in 2001. The baby window gives mothers in extreme emergency situations the opportunity to hand over their child anonymously into safe medical care.
