MeteoSwiss climate and weather data will be freely accessible free of charge. A revision of the ordinance adopted by the Federal Council on Wednesday provides the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology with the corresponding basis.

Fees for meteorological and climatological data will be abolished with the revision of the Ordinance on Meteorology and Climatology (MetO), as the Federal Council announced in a press release on Wednesday. The revised ordinance will enter into force on April 1, 2025.

The move is part of the federal government's "Open Government Data" (OGD) strategy. According to the government, this envisages that the data created by federal offices to fulfill their legal mandate will also be made available to the public.

Meteorological and climatological data are considered to be of particular social and economic value.

MeteoSwiss collects data on wind, precipitation and temperature, among other things. MeteoSwiss also collects data on pollen load and the development status of plants.
