A mountaineer fell while descending the Matterhorn on Friday afternoon and fell around 800 meters onto the Matterhorn glacier. The rescue services were alerted immediately and were only able to determine that the mountaineer had died.

A third party reported the fall at around 2.40 p.m., the Valais cantonal police said on Saturday. The person presumed to be climbing alone was at an altitude of around 4,200 meters on the north face when he fell for unknown reasons. The formal identification of the deceased was still underway on Saturday, the police added.

Two alpinists had already fallen around a thousand meters on the Matterhorn in Zermatt VS on Wednesday. This was also on the north face. The public prosecutor's office is investigating both cases, according to reports.
