At its delegates' meeting, the SVP made a strong case for its border protection initiative. The SVP must take the asylum issue into its own hands with the initiative, said parliamentary group leader Thomas Aeschi on Saturday in Leuk VS.
"Because you know it: under SP asylum minister Jans, absolutely nothing is happening," said Aeschi. The only asylum minister who had brought the number of asylum applications down to 10,000 was Christoph Blocher.
According to Aeschi, one in three welfare recipients is an asylum seeker. This costs a family of four 1,600 francs a year in federal taxes.
"Every year, hundreds of thousands of people enter Switzerland illegally without us knowing their identity or where they are staying," continued the National Councillor from Zug. Switzerland is no longer a safe country."
The border protection initiative launched on May 28 of this year proposes withdrawing the right of asylum from migrants who enter Switzerland illegally and limiting the number of refugees to 5,000 per year.
