The Kirchner Museum Davos is to receive the high-caliber private Ulmberg Collection on permanent loan. The museum building is to be extended in order to present the internationally renowned art collection.

The entire Ulmberg collection is to be handed over to the Kircher Museum (KMD) and thus made fully accessible to the public for the first time, as the KMD announced on Thursday. A permanent loan of 100 works is planned, including numerous large-format paintings.

The collection includes works by artists who were closely associated with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and the Expressionist movement, such as Max Beckmann, Emil Nolde and Lyonel Feininger. However, important contemporary works and concrete art are also represented.

Extension unavoidable

In order to be able to present the Ulmberg Collection to the public in Davos, an extension to the existing museum building is unavoidable. Designed by the architect duo Gigon/Guyer and built in 1992, the KMD is an "internationally renowned architectural icon" in its own words.

The two architects have now produced a detailed study for an extension. An exhibition area of 167 square meters, two depots, an event room and a café are planned.

The extension is scheduled to open in 2028. The Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Foundation, private sponsors and the World Economic Forum will contribute a total of CHF 7 million to the construction costs. An investment contribution of 4 million will be requested from the municipality of Davos. A possible referendum on this would take place at the end of November.
