The Federal Chancellery is the staff office of the Federal Council and the oldest federal authority in Switzerland. It has been in existence since 1803, 45 years longer than the federal state. It consists of three divisions: Political Rights, Federal Council and Communication and Strategy.
Federal Chancellor Viktor Rossi (GLP) heads the Political Rights Division. Like the members of the Federal Council, he is elected by Parliament for four years. Together with the Vice-Chancellor, he takes part in Federal Council meetings and can submit motions, but is not entitled to vote. His section is responsible for people's rights, ballots and electronic voting.
The two Vice-Chancellor's offices are filled by the state government. Vice-Chancellor Rachel Salzmann (center) heads the Federal Council. She is responsible - in coordination with Chancellor Rossi and the new Vice-Chancellor Andrea Arcidiacono (non-party) - for all tasks relating to the preparation, implementation and follow-up of Federal Council meetings.
Arcidiacono's Communication and Strategy Division coordinates the Federal Council's communication with the media, the public, the cantons and Parliament. It includes Communication Support, which advises the Federal Administration on all matters relating to communication. Strategic Management Support prepares planning and accountability reports for the Federal Council and supports the departments in crisis management.
