After the cantons of Bern and Jura voted in favor of the Moutier Concordat, the mood in the Bernese Jura town remained calm and relaxed on Sunday. The electorate in Moutier itself had approved the agreement to change cantons by a fairly clear margin of 56.2 percent.
This means that the approval rate in Moutier was even slightly higher than in 2021, when the population voted on the fundamental question of a change of canton to Jura. At that time, the approval rate was 54.8 percent.
The first estimates and results quickly became known in the early afternoon and were largely in line with expectations. Around 300 people, mainly Projurassiers, had gathered outside the Hôtel de la Gare in Moutier. They were relieved and satisfied with the outcome of the vote. Those gathered waved Jura flags and sang the anthem "La Rauracienne".
Autonomists want to continue
Comte explained the fact that in some places, particularly in Ajoie, approval was somewhat muted by the "no" campaign from SVP circles, but also for historical reasons.
In addition, the voters did not vote on the fundamental issue of the change of canton, but on a contract with the modalities of the change of canton. There were probably also certain financial concerns.
The Mouvement Autonomist Jurassien (MAJ) will not disband, said Comte. "No one can stop anyone from dreaming and fighting," he said. The MAJ would work to strengthen inter-Jurassic relations.
Bernese SVP insists on an end to the Jura issue
On the Bernese side, the SVP spoke out on Sunday afternoon. It traditionally supports the forces loyal to Bern and was the only party in the canton of Bern to oppose the Concordat.
She regretted the outcome of the vote and insisted that the Jura issue was now definitively closed with the change of canton from Moutier. The "fighting words and jibes" from the pro-Jura side must now come to an end.
