Pierre Alain Schnegg, member of the Bernese cantonal government, expressed his delight on Sunday at the high level of approval in both cantons for the Moutier Concordat. With the change of canton from Moutier to Jura, the Jura issue is now over, said the SVP government councillor.
The clear yes in the canton of Bern with 83.2 percent was predictable, Schnegg told the Keystone-SDA news agency.
He hoped that the pro-Jura forces in the region would now prove to be democrats and not make any further advances towards the Bernese Jura. Schnegg also expressed the hope that the federal government would intervene if necessary.
The costs of the change of canton were high for both cantons, Schnegg explained. However, it was now time to look ahead and put the available resources back into other projects.
The Bernese Jura has a good future in the canton of Bern even without Moutier, said Schnegg. The canton's services, which were previously offered in Moutier, would be relocated to Tavannes and Reconvilier. In this respect, the population of the Bernese Jura need not worry.
And the departure of around 7,000 French-speaking inhabitants from the canton of Bern need not worry the French-speaking part of the canton either. If anything, the French-speaking population is increasing, particularly in Biel and Seeland, Schnegg explained.
The SVP government councillor himself comes from the Bernese Jura. His party has traditionally supported the forces loyal to the Bernese people in the region.
