Swiss designations of origin (AOP) and protected geographical indications (PGI) should be recognized and respected abroad and the Federal Council should work towards this. This is what the Council of States is calling for in a motion.

The proposal was submitted by the Committee for Economic Affairs and Taxation of the small chamber (WAK-S). It wants to encourage the Federal Council to use the available resources in its efforts to achieve recognition of SOPs and PDOs. The Council of States adopted the motion on Monday without opposition. It will now go to the National Council.

Accordingly, the Federal Council should not only insist on Swiss designations of origin in free trade agreements, but also with countries that have not acceded to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement or that are not bound by free trade agreements. The Federal Council declared its agreement with the mandate.

However, the Council of States rejected a more far-reaching motion from the National Council, which called for the enforcement of and compliance with the SOP and IGP in all trade agreements, at the request of the WAK-S. It feared that no new trade agreements could be concluded with this demand.
