Andreas Karlaganis becomes new theater director in Düsseldorf

Bern-born Andreas Karlaganis takes over the management of the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus. He comes from one of the most renowned theaters. The current artistic director Wilfried Schulz will step down after ten years in 2026.
Andreas Karlaganis, former Artistic Vice-Director at the Burgtheater Vienna, is to become the new General Director of the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus. The 49-year-old native of Bern will succeed 72-year-old Wilfried Schulz on the Rhine from the 2026/27 season. This was announced by the City of Düsseldorf and the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Culture following a supervisory board meeting.
Karlaganis' contract in Düsseldorf runs for five years. He will begin preparations for his first season this fall.
Karlaganis has worked at several renowned theaters. Until this summer, he was head dramaturge and deputy artistic director at the Burgtheater. After studying German, theater studies and philosophy, Karlaganis first worked at the Schaubühne am Lehninerplatz in Berlin. This was followed by positions at the Schauspielhaus Graz, Residenztheater Munich and then the Schauspielhaus Zürich, where he first worked as a dramaturge and later as deputy artistic director. In 2019, Karlaganis moved to the Burgtheater Vienna. There, he worked closely with artistic director Martin Kušej, with whom he had already collaborated in Munich.
Karlaganis has proven in his career that he stands for a versatile program, moves and inspires viewers, it was said in Düsseldorf on his election.
The Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus is one of the largest theaters in the German-speaking world. It is supported by the city and state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The theater stages around 900 performances per year. In the 2023/24 season, more than 252,000 visitors were recorded, the highest audience figure in the past 35 years.
