Olten composer Thomas Trachsel has been awarded this year's Art Prize of the Canton of Solothurn. The 52-year-old is one of the most internationally renowned composers of wind music, the Solothurn cantonal government announced on Wednesday.

He will receive the 20,000 Swiss franc art prize for his diverse and outstanding achievements as a composer, according to the statement.

Trachsel has also led various wind orchestras for 20 years, taught music at the Progymnasium and runs his own music publishing company. As President of the Music Commission of the Swiss Wind Music Association, he is committed to promoting young people.

The Canton of Solothurn will also be awarding eight specialist prizes and two recognition prizes of CHF 10,000 each on November 11 at the Stadttheater Olten.
