Director Ramon Zürcher's feature film "The Sparrow in the Chimney" has a chance of winning a European Film Award. The family drama is among 16 films that the European Film Academy added to the selection for the nominations on Thursday.
The selection also includes films such as "The Room Next Door" by Pedro Almodóvar and "Conclave" by Edward Berger, which will also be shown at the Zurich Film Festival. With these newly added 16 films, the selection for the nominations is now complete.
The European Film Academy will decide in a multi-stage process which film will ultimately receive a European Film Award on December 7 in Lucerne. In mid-August, the Academy had already announced 29 films, meaning that a total of 45 are now available for selection.
In the coming weeks, the 5000 members of the Film Academy in Berlin will now watch these films and decide on the actual nominations in the various categories of the European Film Awards by November 5.
This also makes it clear that Switzerland has the honor of hosting the European Film Awards gala at the KKL in Lucerne for the first time. However, local filmmaking is comparatively poorly represented. In addition to "The Sparrow in the Chimney", only "The Shameless" by Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanow is on the shortlist. The film is a co-production between Switzerland, France, Bulgaria, Taiwan and India.
Filmmaking from France, the United Kingdom and Italy, for example, is particularly well represented. Works by European directors that premiered between June 2023 and May 2024 are eligible. A total of 26 European countries are represented.
The European Film Awards have been presented by the European Film Academy, based in Berlin, since 1988. The event takes place there every two years. In other years, it is the turn of other cities throughout Europe.
