In 2024, the Swiss glaciers lost 2.5 percent of their volume. This means that a total of 1.2 cubic kilometers of ice melted this summer. But how much is that really?
SEEN
At 1.2 cubic kilometers, the volume of the melted ice corresponds to the volume of Lake Biel. With a surface area of around 40 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 74 meters, Switzerland's sixth-largest lake has a volume of 1.2 cubic kilometers. To fill Lake Zurich, three times as much ice would have had to melt.
TRUCK
With a volume of 1.2 cubic kilometers, you could fill over 34 million trucks.
WATER CONSUMPTION IN SWITZERLAND
Switzerland consumes around one cubic kilometer of water every year. The melted ice could therefore have covered Switzerland's water consumption.
LITER
When 1.2 cubic kilometers of ice melt, 1,100,400,000,000 liters of water are created. That's one trillion, one hundred billion and four hundred million.
OLYMPIA POOL
The melted water could have been used to fill an Olympic swimming pool every 71 seconds throughout the year. This would have filled a total of 440,160 pools.
