For the first time in six years, companies worldwide have engaged in less greenwashing. This is the result of a study published on Wednesday by data specialist Reprisk.
Overall, the number of companies involved in greenwashing fell by 12% between summer 2023 and summer 2024. The downward trend is probably the result of increased regulatory measures.
Reprisk sees the politicization of ESG issues in the USA as a further driving force. Companies and funds have therefore become more cautious with environmental promises.
In Switzerland, however, there is a counter-trend. A total of 61 companies were involved in greenwashing, 30 percent more than in the previous year. According to Reprisk, serious cases have even increased by 50 percent.
Greenwashing cases at banks and financial service providers fell by 20 percent worldwide between 2023 and 2024. At Swiss institutions, the number increased by 27 percent to 14 companies.
A total of 13 markets were considered for the study. In addition to Switzerland, these included the UK, the USA and the European Union.
